After several unsuccessful tries a few months ago, I'm attempting a sourdough starter again. But you know what? If anyone has a good, reliable starter, I would be VERY willing to trade for it, at this point! =) I can trade for kefir grains or a kombucha scoby, but both would have to wait a couple of weeks. Alternatively, I'd also be happy to just pay shipping (or pay a small price, I'm pretty broke though).
Also, in case I don't get any replies, what are good, reliable places to get starters online?
Hey! I emailed a friend of mine I know who used to have starter, and this is what she said:
I haven't had a starter for a LONG time. After finding the maintenance of my start to be something that just added stress to my already overwhelming life, I switched to a new method of bread baking. Now I make a "starter" using buttermilk/yogurt 2 days before I bake, but ONLY when I'm going to actually bake. It works great, and I love it. :)
The method I use is one I picked up from "Peter Reinhart's Whole Grain Breads". It's a "biga". The master formula in the book has it. The book gives methods for using biga or traditional starter, as well as instructions for creating a starter. But I've made two kinds of whole grain bread, whole wheat pita, and whole wheat bagels from that master formula, and also plan to make crackers.
this is where I got my sourdough starter from. I haven't started that yet, but I started their yogurt and it seemed to work (haven't tasted it yet) and their water kefir is great.
Pleasant company to deal with, fast shipping, and of the 1.5 products I've tried, I've been happy!
It has been a while since you asked so I am not sure if you are still interested but I think I have a starter going down here, but I want to bake a loaf to test it first so it would be about a week to recharge so I can send you some if it is working.
